About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Full Stack Engineer to join the Data Cognition Team at BMO Capital Markets. You will build and ship AI-enabled products used across Investment & Corporate Banking and Global Markets. The role combines strong software engineering, applied AI experience and end-to-end ownership of secure, reliable applications at enterprise scale.
Our Team
The Data Cognition Team builds reusable AI and user-centric products that solve high-value business problems across BMO Capital Markets. We work in small, delivery-focused teams and partner closely with colleagues across business, product, user experience, data, risk and technology to move solutions from idea to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and ship full stack applications for Investment & Corporate Banking and Global Markets, owning them end to end from technical design through testing, deployment, monitoring and ongoing improvement.
- Apply practical knowledge of generative AI, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation and agentic workflows to build production-ready, AI-enabled features into our applications.
- Build secure APIs, MCP servers and services that integrate our applications with enterprise systems and data.
- Work closely with our User Experience team to turn user needs into simple, intuitive and polished experiences.
- Partner with business stakeholders, product, data science, risk and technology teams to deliver measurable business outcomes.
- Write clean, maintainable code supported by automated tests, code reviews and CI/CD, using AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve speed and quality.
- Build for reliability, security and scale through strong observability, performance management and production support.
- Contribute to architecture decisions, engineering standards, reusable components and best practices for applying AI across the team.
Must Have
- 3+ years (Associate) or 6+ years (Vice President) of professional software engineering experience, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong software engineering experience with Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, building modern web applications with frameworks such as React and backend services using FastAPI or Flask.
- Hands-on experience building AI-enabled applications, including the use of large language models, model APIs, MCP servers and agents.
- Experience designing APIs, microservices and scalable applications, working with SQL and NoSQL databases, data pipelines and real-time or messaging systems such as WebSockets, Redis or message queues.
- Strong understanding of containerization with Docker, automated testing, CI/CD, application security, observability and production operations.
- Demonstrated ability to take ambiguous problems from concept to production iteratively, with clear communication across technical, business and control teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience taking AI-enabled applications into production, including monitoring, evaluating and improving them with real users.
- Experience designing application-level authentication and permissioning, including token-based access and role-based entitlements across multiple services.
- Experience with vector databases, embeddings and retrieval techniques that improve the quality of AI responses.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS, and to container orchestration such as Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of financial markets and Investment & Corporate Banking workflows.
